The book of Ecclesiastes is unique and provocative as it states repeatedly that everything is meaningless (“vanity”) without a proper focus on God. The book reveals the necessity of fearing God in a fallen, confusing and frustrating world. This “final dance” of the wisdom literature shows us a man who lived through these challenges and came out on the other side with a wiser, more seasoned perspective. Ultimately, the great truth of Ecclesiastes lies in the acknowledgement of God’s ever-present hand in our lives.
MALACHI – “Corner-Cutting” Religion
What do you do when prophecies do not come to pass? What is your response when leaders themselves are filled with despair and despondency? What if you begin to say to yourself, ‘God would not mind if I hold back my tithes’? God sent the prophet Malachi with an urgent message to his people living in the post-exilic period. What is this message and how can it be significant and relevant to our times? Through 4 sessions, we will cover the historical background of the book, the 6 disputations used by Malachi against his people, and draw out the book’s implications for today.
